Developing a new garment usually starts with a design.
Before a fashion brand can move into production, the design needs to become a real garment that can be fitted, reviewed and adjusted.
This is where sample development becomes an important part of apparel production.
This project was developed for a UK women’s fashion brand, covering a dress and jacket from initial design through sample development.
Starting With the Design
A fashion brand may provide a design drawing, reference garment, measurements or a tech pack.
Sometimes the information is very detailed.Sometimes the first idea is much simpler.
The job is to understand what the customer is trying to achieve and turn that idea into something that can actually be made.
At this stage, details such as fabric, construction, measurements and finishing all need to be considered.
Choosing the Right Fabric
The original design does not always tell us exactly how the garment will behave.
The fabric can change the way a garment looks and feels.
This is why fabric selection can be an important part of garment development rather than something that is decided separately from the garment itself.
Making the First Sample
Once the main details are confirmed, the first sample can be developed.
The pattern is made based on the available measurements and construction requirements, and the garment is then produced as a physical sample.
The first sample is not always expected to be perfect.
Its purpose is to turn the design into something real that can be checked.
The customer can see the actual fabric, shape, proportions and construction rather than judging everything from a drawing.
Fitting and Making Changes
After receiving the sample, the fashion brand may have comments.
The length may need to change.The fit may need to be adjusted.A sleeve, neckline or other detail may need to be changed.Sometimes the fabric does not give the expected result and another option needs to be considered.
These changes are a normal part of product development.
The important thing is to understand each comment clearly and apply it correctly to the next version of the garment.
From Sample to Approved Sample
Sample development can sometimes require more than one round.
The goal is not simply to make another sample, is to reach a sample that the customer is confident to approve for production.
Once the sample is approved, it becomes the main reference for the next stage.
Measurements, construction, fabric, trims and finishing need to be clearly confirmed before bulk production begins.
Why the Sample Stage Matters
A good sample gives both sides a clearer understanding of the final garment.
For the fashion brand, it provides a physical product to review before committing to bulk production.
For the manufacturer, it provides a confirmed reference for production.
This can help reduce misunderstandings later in the process.It also gives the opportunity to solve problems while the quantity is still small.
From an Idea to a Garment
The distance between a fashion design and a finished garment can be quite large.
It involves:Fabric selection, pattern development, fitting, sample revisions and communication all play a part.
